- Medical doctor (1981), specialized in Public Health (1987) and Occupational Medicine (1992);
- Public Health authority at Setubal Region (1990-2004);
- Coordinator of the National Programme for the prevention of healthcare associated infections (2004-2010)
- As Directorate General of Health staff member, is the ECDC, WHO and European Commission’s Portuguese representative of health care associated infections, antimicrobial resistance, patient safety and hand hygiene;
- Head of Patient Safety Division of the Directorate General of Health (2007-2012);
As the Head of the Patient Safety Division promoted the implementation of the following areas/projects: WHO 1th challenge “Clean Care is Safer Care”, WHO 2th challenge “Safe Surgery Saves Lives”, the national programmes to prevent healthcare associated infections and antimicrobial resistance, the adverse event national reporting and learning system, the national observatory on patient safety and the delivering of guidelines on patient safety
- Invited professor at the Portuguese Catholic University (2007-2012).
