Dan Metcalfe

Head of Planning and Strategy, Department of Health

Dan joined the Department in 2007, and he is now Head of Planning and Strategy. He is responsible for the strategy and evaluation of the Department’s national social marketing programmes. His portfolio ranges from cradle to grave and includes obesity prevention, tobacco control and the early diagnosis of cancer. During his time at DH it has won every major Marketing and Creative award, including Marketing Society and IPA effectiveness awards.

He has held a range of senior marketing roles inside and outside of government. This includes six years at Cancer Research UK, where he managed national campaigns, and two years at the Cabinet Office, where he advised on cross government behaviour change issues such as climate change.

Dan is passionate about the third sector, and has run a small charity in the North East, helped to launch Movember in the UK and is currently a trustee of Cambridge House, an innovative frontline charity working in South London.
