About ECDC
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), established in 2005, is the European Union (EU) agency with the responsibility to strengthen Europe’s defences against infectious diseases. It is based in Stockholm, Sweden.
ECDC’s mission is to identify, assess and communicate current and emerging threats to human health posed by infectious diseases and to support and help coordinate EU countries’ preparedness and response capacities. ECDC promotes the necessary coherence in the risk communication process on health threats, in close collaboration with the Member States, the European Commission and other interested parties with regard to public information activities.
ECDC’s scientific work is closely linked with the activities of national public health institutes and agencies, public health researchers, managers and practitioners in the European Union and EEA/EFTA countries, with whom we are in daily contact, exchanging information, providing analysis, guidance and technical support to promote public health in Europe.
The priority audience of the ECDC is public health professionals in the Member States and the EU institutions and agencies and other partner organisations who use this information in their daily work to promote public health in Europe.
The Centre’s health communication activities aim to:
- Strengthen communication capacities by serving as an EU wide resource on communicable diseases prevention and providing comprehensive and useful information based on scientific evidence;
- Support Member states with planning and assessing health communication programmes and campaigns, by developing skills and competencies in the area of health communication, risk communication and monitoring public perceptions, attitudes and behaviours related to communicable diseases.
